Event Recap
Friday night’s January 17, 2025 WWE SmackDown from the Pechanga Arena in San Diego was exactly the kind of card that gives wrestling nerds something to argue about all weekend. Tiffany Stratton proved Tiffy Time wasn’t a fluke, countering Bayley’s Rose Plant and hitting her World’s Prettiest Moonsault to retain the WWE Women’s Championship in a main event that ran just past the 20-minute mark and felt like a real statement. Before that, Kevin Owens put Rey Mysterio away with a Pop-Up Powerbomb in a hometown match that got the crowd loud early, and Bianca Belair & Naomi teamed up to score a solid win over Nia Jax & Candice LeRae in tag action. The Motor City Machine Guns kept their hot streak rolling by taking out Los Garza with Skull & Bones, while Piper Niven dispatched B-FAB quick and clean. Jimmy Uso’s singles bout with Carmelo Hayes fizzled into a no-contest, which was more “meh” than memorable, but Solo Sikoa’s return segment drew boos as he made his presence felt again. And yeah, there was even a tease of Charlotte Flair’s return that got pops on the highlights reel — because why not? It wasn’t perfect, but San Diego got a fun mix of solid matches, surprise returns, and a main event that kept Tiffany’s title run rolling through Bayley’s assault.

Summary
Bianca and Naomi kicked things off with a solid tag win over Nia Jax & Candice LeRae. Belair took a beating early but bounced back, and a misfired Leg Drop by Jax accidentally struck LeRae. Naomi tagged in and hit a crisp Bubba Bomb on LeRae for the pin. It was a fun little opener that let both Belair and Naomi look sharp and strong.
Summary
Jimmy Uso and Carmelo Hayes had what almost felt like a singles match, but it didn’t reach a finish — the brawl with Jacob Fatu & Tama Tonga spilled in and turned it into a No Contest. Both guys had their moments before the interference, and while it was disappointing not to get a clean result, the chaos fit right into the night’s beat-up vibe.
The Motor City Machine Guns
Final
Pinfall
Summary
Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley brought veteran tag craft to life against Los Garza. Despite Santos Escobar & Elektra Lopez trying to tilt the odds, the Machine Guns worked around it and hit Skull & Bones on Angel Garza for the win. Classic, no-nonsense tag team wrestling — no frills, just hits.
Summary
Piper Niven made quick work of B-FAB in a short but hard-hitting bout. Piper’s power was on display, culminating in a big Pop-Up Driver for the pin. Afterward Michin ran out with a kendo stick to even the odds against Piper & Chelsea Green, adding a bit of post-match drama.
Summary
Kevin Owens and Rey Mysterio delivered a spirited singles match in Rey’s hometown. Rey even pulled off a 619, but Owens kept grinding and sealed the win with a Pop-Up Powerbomb. After the bell, Owens tried to hit a Package Piledriver on Mysterio until Cody Rhodes sprinted in and turned it into a full-on brawl.
Main Event
Summary
n the main event, Tiffany Stratton defended against Bayley in a back-and-forth contest. Both women traded offense and near-falls, but Stratton nailed the Prettiest Moonsault Ever for the pin to retain her title. Bayley’s effort was gritty and fun to watch, but Tiffy Time lived on in San Diego.
